za-flag1.gif (27557 bytes)I was very fortunate to travel to the Republic of South Africa in March, 1997.  It is a beautiful country with friendly, fantastic people! Everywhere I went, people asked me if I would come back to South Africa. My answer, a resounding yes. South Africa is the only nation on earth that guarantees equality for lesbians and gay men in their Constitution.

This trip to South Africa is an incredible part of my life adventure I mentioned to you earlier.  God led me to join with a bunch of my friends and go to South Africa. There we  conducted an Exercise in Christian Community Living (Excel) weekend near Pretoria.   Excel offers three different weekends for personal and community spiritual growth, including a weekend for couples.  I attended an Excel weekend in 1977 that proved to be the moment when I really committed my life to God.  Enjoy these pictures of one of my favorite places.

There are an incredible array of brightly colored birds in South Africa.   This one was photographed in Krueger National Park.  My friends Keith, Jeff and I spent a couple of days at the park.  A person could spend many days here - such peace.  And to see so many animals alive that I had only read about or seen on television, the memory gives me goose flesh and a smile.

I would sit out through the passenger window and take pictures, while Keith spotted watched for and recorded bird sightings.  I left the driving to Jeff after I almost killed us on the way to Krueger Park.  They drive on the left side of the roadway and I was passing someone when I saw a car traveling toward me.  Well rather than go back to the left, my instinct was to go to the right.   Which I did!  I immediately realized my error and had to go far right onto the shoulder to avoid hitting someone head on.  This took place at about 80 or 90 kilometers per hour.  Afterward I pulled over and got in the passengers seat where I was very content.  Thank You God that no one was injured that day along the roadside.   Please keep us all safe on our journeys. Amen

Cosmos grew along the roadside for many kilometers.  I fell in love in and with South Africa.  Both of these affairs have changed me profoundly.  I still long for the one I met and loved. Indeed love still, but that will be another story, soon.......
